My advice is to find a niche....make yourself stand out by doing something different. EVERYONE is doing portrait photography and it seems everyone wants to shoot babies and families.

When I launched my biz, I started looking at portrait photography too and realized lots of people do it and in my area there are some amazing photographers I couldn't compete with. Since my background is photojournalism, I realized that my niche was commercial photography...it is tough to get into but worth it. I do lots of freelance for publications across the US (including my full time job at a newspaper!) as well as corporate photography. As a photojournalist, I have a knack for telling stories with photos which works well for lots of companies that want a theme for new office buildings or websites.

Don't give up...just reinvent yourself!

I'm a bit too tired to read all the replies just now - so may be someone else mentioned this.... I suggest you need to reinvent yourself. you need to develop a style all your own. then you need to market your uniqueness. not easy to find a personal style for many but if you can, eventually you won't be in competition with the low ballers. good luck

Psssst - this is an old thread from 2010. That last post is a spam, hence dug up from the grave.
