You're really going to have to pay.

But a lot of sites offer a gallery, passworded, on top of your main site. SmugMug can be customised heavily.

What do you use at the moment?

I personally use Zenfolio and it works good. You can password protect galleries and all are right-click protected. The bottomline Zenfolio is pretty reasonably priced.

I assume you allow them, in this way, to download full-res images from the site? So it's not a proofing gallery?

The latter tends to be quite expensive, whether it's a custom designed site with flash or whatnot.

SmugMug is probably best for what you're looking for; the quality is great, and the client can download several types of files for it (low res, medium, etc.). It allows 100% customisation at Pro level, and apart from the small 'powered by SmugMug' at the bottom, the same for Power. It's cheap for hosting. You can link it to a GoDaddy domain, or whatever you already have. Password function is there, and watermarking is an option for Pro accounts

There are a few web designers out there who'll do the customisation for you, or you can do it yourself. There are a few pointers out in SM's forums.

Not sure of anything else that allows this that isn't a proofing gallery or has a password function.

I think you'll spend more time trying to find something free that works well.
If your business model is geared towards print sales, $100 per year for zenfolio will pay for itself quickly. I don't aim to sell prints at all, it's just a built in bonus in case someone wants it - and I got $100 back in sales in just a few months. I thought zenfolio was easier to set up than smugmug - I tested both.

Take a look at gallery2. It is open source, easily customizable, and you can set different passwords for each album. gallery.menalto.com
