Default Gallery Commission ?

I've been looking lately to get a feeler for hanging in a local gallery if I could get accepted. I came across a local gallery looking for a new artist. I was reading their information and kind of stumbled when I saw their commission percentage. Maybe I just wasn't expecting it, but I'm wondering what is normal. They are asking 30% commission. Is this normal? High? Or low? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Around here, they get 25%. So I guess it depends on the gallery. Price accordingly.
Good luck,
Mark

A local cafe I approached charges 20%. 30% doesn't seem too bad for a gallery considering they HAVE to sell your photo or else they make no income. In a cafe or restaurant it's a win-win situation to display art.

The higher the commision, the higher you price your photo.

Yes, you can "bury" the commission by finding what you'd normally price your photo and then adding the commission to it. i.e., if you find you would ideally sell a print for $75, you could build the 30% into the price and tell the gallery it's a $100 print (give or take).

Of course with higher prices this can have the drawback of inflating your price to a less than attractive point. For example, a large giclee print in a custom frame might realistically be priced at $600. 30% on top of that is a not insignificant amount.

You take the words right out of my mouth. I do this for the same for little league, middle and high school jobs and fund raisers where they take a %.
