Default Selling Stock Photography Question...??

A local graphic designer contacted us this morning inquiring about buying some of our photos to be used in a brochure he's designing for his client. It's all local town photos..no people. He referred to them as buying "stock photos" from us, and only has a limited budget. Being that my wife took the call, I do not know what the brochure will be used for..assumedly, something I should find out?? I have zero idea of what we could expect to charge for these...he says he'd like 5 - 6 of our images. Any thoughts on this from you folks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Vince

Ask where the brouchure will be distributed, how many printed, and if advertising space will be offered to purchase. Since he has a limited budget you might be able to arrange for a free ad for your business in addition to payment. Payment for stock is about $75.00 to $125.00 depending on page placement and size. Covers go for about $250 up, depending on circulation.

Thanks Jim, as I stated above, I need to find out a little more about what this brochure is, and to how and where it'll be distributed. Also, will we get credit for the images?..another question I'll have of him. Once somebody buys an image, Jim, can they be used freely, and as often as they want...what exactly are the rights that go along with buying an image. Is this all spelled out in advance via an agreement / contract? Thanks again Jim

Basically the rights are what you grant him. One time usage North American publication rights. International rights. Limited rights for a year for a brochure or web usage or a complete buy out. Credit byline is a must! Every thing must be spelling out in a contract signed by you and him. Sometimes they are sneaky and try to use photos over and over again without paying, that's where a buyout might come in handy. Those are things you might want to ask.
