First Photo show... advice?
In may I'll be having a show at a local coffee shop. I am going to have about 14 photos on the walls for a month. I am still picking out the photos but thinking ahead, I'm trying to decide on how big to print them. Is 8x10 or 10x15 better? or would you go bigger or smaller? Should I number my prints like the edition like you would if it was a painting or drawing? And how much do you think I should charge? I've never done this before, all I currently sell is greeting cards and recipe on etsy, so I'm not sure of how much they should be priced at? Have you ever had a show? How'd it go? Did you sell anything? DId you have an opening? What did you do at the opening? |

Size depends on the size you like your photos to be and the space they'll be in. Usually if a print is too large it will dominate the space and if it's too small it'll get lost, though there are exceptions. You should have a reason for the size of each print, and don't me afraid of displaying differnet photos at different sizes.
You can number your prints but only if they are actually from a specified print run. That is, if you number the print "#1 of 15", don't make more than 15 of those prints. It's pretty rare that prints on a cafe wall sell, but not unheard of. Ask what they'll be taking in commission, whether it's a flat rate or a percentage. The general advice is to price your print at 3-4 times your cost. So, if an 8x10 print costs you $6, it costs $4 for you to mat it, and the frame is $18, that's a $28 cost for you, so around $85-$110 or so. You can add in the commission charge if you want offset that, so if it's $25 you're looking at $105-$135 or if it's say, 20%, you can add that to get to $100-$130 or so. There's some psychology involved too; too cheap and people won't think it's valuable enough to buy; the more expensive you price, the more value it appears to have. But too expensive and of course there will need to be a justification. |
