As a small business under current tax rules (they change everytime you blink) you can expense any equipment under section 179 up to something like $125,000 (might be even higher - I forget) with the limitation that it can be no more than income earned by the business. Thus, instead of capitalizing and depreciating over time you can expense it all up to the lessor of what your earn or the cap.

All you need to do is keep good records to establish legitimacy until you're earning a decent buck. However, you're correct, it doesn't hurt to do these things. Only problem is, if you do it for a while and decide you don't have the energy to continue it, you've wasted your time and money (although a small amount) establishing your business name.
