Default Pricing

I was just wondering what people think of pricing for the first shoot. I was thinking of charging $50 for half an hour, including a disk of all the images. Is this too much? I live in Hawaii, and many of the other photog's are charging around $200.

that sounds about right. Gotta take in account of if you travel to some of the more exotic places in Oahu to shoot too.

To the OP, so much depends on what sort of work you do, but there are a lot of threads with the same exact question on this forum.

Here is one for example, but I'd recommend a quick search so you can see several others.

Pricing in my area

Well, if you can drive to your location, scope it out for best places to shoot while checking the light, do your session, drive back home again, do all your post processing, burn a disk (after you pay for it) and finally drive to deliver it to your customer for 50 bucks, then I'm ready to learn from you! At a $50 charge, that'll probably work out to around 6+ hours...equates to ~$8.00 / hr. Please, do not sell your time, your skills, and your investment short.

That's a great post. It made me really think about what I want and should be charging for my time. I went back through my records and calculated my explicit camera expenses, which means lens, flashes and accessories. My expenditures are more than I thought. Even if I want to do photography as a side business I'm going to need to charge more.

Here's another great article that really encouraged me:
