I was approached to include some of my images in an upcoming book. I'm a neophyte newbie but took some shots that somebody liked and they are asking if I would agree to provide them. She is willing to pay for them but doesn't have a huge budget. Anyone have a feel for what to ask for $$-wise? What terms/conditions I insist on? Thanks.

First, you need to find out where the photos are going to be played. Front cover, back cover, inside. How large, full page, 1/2, 1/4 or smaller. How many books are going to be published.
Ask about where will they be published in North American, overseas. If so then you're talking about North American publication rights, or quite possible international publication rights as well. Do they want one time usage rights or unlimited usage rights. Is it going to run on the www, in other articles, how about used in book promos? All these facts add up to money and you need to ask those questions, otherwise, you'll end up with a few bucks and a photo credit. She might not have a big budget, but rest assured, she's getting paid by the publisher, right? If she or they can get them cheap, then it's more money to stick in their own greedy pockets, know what I mean?

If she's already comfortable mentioning her budget, just ask what the budget is. No nonsense.
Then you can start asking questions and thinking about the things Jim mentioned. Here's some priceless info on licensing. |
