Default Another Facebook question...

Ok, working on starting a little side photography business shooting recreational league sports. I won't bore you with the details but, part of my marketing will be on FB as many parents are friends with me already. However, when you put a picture on FB it compresses it and the colors are desaturated. I'm not sure I want to post pictures of my work there because of this but I realize I sort of need to.

What are those of you who use FB to promote your services doing about this?

Thanks.

I use facebook but I also link to my website and my flickr so that fans can view full size images.

I don't do much to change how they look, and to be honest didn't think it was that drastic. I usually save 2 final versions of my images, a web-ready image (1mb-ish) and the full size image.

I suppose you could play around with it and try boosting your saturation before uploading if it bothers you that much.

I guess I accept, and I think most people do, that images uploaded to FB etc aren't going to look perfect. Heck, I've uploaded video slideshows where the aspect has been screwed by the host. for me it's more like a thumbnail than a true representation of the work.

How about keeping them on Flickr, then put a link in FB to the pics? That way they can view different sizes.

I just looked at your FB photos and they look great on my laptop. But I agree about just adding a link to Flickr if you are not happy with the way they look on FB.

But they do look good on mine.

I love taking baseball and softball photos. Great to try and catch the ball inches from the bat.

Good luck!

If he links to Flickr though, he can't directly tag the image and that, at least to me, defeats the whole point of using it in the first place: the viral effect (dun dun duhhh).

Facebook compresses the crap out of anything with pure black and pure white in the image (giving greys at those ends). You can try staying away from those with a "facebook-format" picture, but it isn't gonna look great

I say just dont post images and link to a website.

I think it's not a big enough deal to not post pictures up on facebook. It's my primary way of sharing my work with family and friends because of its accessibility. Besides, you can't account for the image completely unless it's a print; everyone's screen is different and will render slightly different colors as you know. My vote is facebook pictures with an accompanying link.

I had the same problem when I first started using Facebook for my business, and it had something to do with the color profile that I was saving my files in versus the color profile on Facebook. As far as the compression is concerned, I use an action in PS that does a quick web-resize and sharpen, and then I save the smaller file seperately and upload those to Facebook.

If you're going to use Facebook to promote your business, you pretty much need to post some photos. You're not going to get anyone's attention on Facebook with links to your Flickr page.

FB is more like a social medium to keep in touch but it has a good capacity for you to imbed videos and links. If you are selling, it even displays the eBay logo to make your products more noticeable. As with any freebie site, you can liberally use the facilities to suit your commercial goals without breaking the busines budget. Best regards!
