Default Assignment: Architectural Detail Oct. 21 - Nov. 4

I hope you were able to find some interesting Architectural Details this past week and you took the time to look closely at things you might ordinarily pass without noticing. If you haven't taken your shot yet, don't worry you still have time. Remember, even after the Mini-Contest closes you can still do the assignments.
Instead of looking at the big picture, notice the little things. Get up close and personal with a few buildings. Take a walk through your city, town or village and take note of the forms you see that constitute small parts of buildings and other structures. As you notice them, figure out a way to make them look interesting. Can you photograph it from an unusual angle? Think about the position of the sun. Will taking your shot at a different time of day cause some interesting shadows that will highlight the details? Side lighting often works well to create shadows and to highlight textures and give dimension. How will the shapes, curves, and lines work in your composition? Are there patterns that might make a good abstract shot? Remember that often filling the frame with your subject will keep other things from being distracting. In some cases, a telephoto lens may be helpful.
Photographing the Smaller things in Life when You Travel

Day 157-365 "Mail Slot"
As always, rules:
Please note the change in closing time.

Just a note to new posters: DO NOT start a new thread for your post. Please just hit the reply button at the bottom of any current post and put your image there.

1. Your original image you submit should be taken between the 21st of October and the 4th of November. Each week as an assignment closes on the Wednesday, it will be AUTOMATICALLY deemed *CLOSED* after 8am GMT ( 3am EST) and any posts after that time will not be eligible for the assignment competition. Don't wait until the last minute to post!
[B]
2. Your post must include "Assignment: Architectural Detail" (to show your permission to count it for the contest) and the date the picture was taken (to show that it is a valid entry).

3. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message.

4. Only one entry per member (if you can't restrain yourself until the end of the first week you can post two or three separate pictures but your entry should be in a separate post and the only marked with the text above). It must be an original image taken by you.

5. Remember the cross-site image size limit (800px on the longest side).

6. If the image does not exist in post at the end of the contest, it is disqualified. If you modify anything on flickr and re-save the image then the link is broken and the message needs edited to link the picture again before it will be included in the contest.
For everyone, please do not repeat other people's photos by quoting them until the contest is over. If you want to comment on or discuss an entry you can use a link to it (or just delete the picture from the quoted text).

7. If you are looking for the winners of the mini-contest, please check the front page of the DPS blog Saturday late afternoon (EST) and here.

Next week our theme is The Economy. Around the world the economy is effecting us in many different ways. See if you can come up with a shot that illustrates it in some way. It can be a personal shot or take your camera for a walk and see what you can find.

Corner Roof

Corner Roof

The shopping mall near the house has some nice architectural details on their roof top and this is on of them. I did an HDR process on this and changed it to b/w because the clouds gave more dramatic effect of the roof top

Default Assignment: Architectural Detail

I like the detail in the neon on the marquee of our newly remodeled local theater. The neon fixtures make an otherwise dull building fun to look at.

The houses either side of this one have plain boring fences, but this house has stuck with its fancy, if rather run-down, fence.

I'm not sure whether or not this one counts but we often joke that my horse is "as big as a house" (At 2200 lbs, and 5'8" at the shoulder, he pretty much is!!)
