FIRE IN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The little engine that couldn't

Fire in the fire department

EXIF on Flickr

During a recent weekend trip to Barcelona, we came across a parade of vintage cars. This one was supposed to be one of the highlights in the parade, but unfortunately it couldn't take the pressure from all the curious bystanders.

Not the best composition - I had my 60mm prime and not too much space to operate in.

This is quite cute. I think if you straigntened it a bit, it would take care of the composition.

being a filipino, i just thought it apt to write a few lines... here's my entry

Rice shortage in a Rice country?

Rice is no mere commodity in the Philippines - it is THE commodity. Although a rice producing country, Philippines has been encountering a rice shortage several years already; that importing rice from neighbouring third world countries has become the only option. With a demand of 33,000 tonnes a day, rice prices in the Philippines is on a record soar of around Php 35.00 per kilo.

Despite rising global prices, the government has bought about 1.2 million tonnes of rice out of the 1.8 million it says it will need to import to meet demand in 2008. The National Food Authority (NFA), the grain purchasing arm of the government that spends billions of pesos every year subsidising rice to the public, is now one of the biggest drags on public finances, with net liabilities in 2006 of nearly 43 billion pesos ($1 billion).

But the NFA has a very small impact. In local markets, traders often tell customers they are out of NFA rice, which is kept at 18.25 pesos a kilogram, forcing them to pay nearly 30 pesos per kg for other varieties. It is common to see long lines like these in markets selling NFA rice, especially in the rural areas of the Philippines. If in stock, most customers are forced to buy 1 kilo per day.

Filipinos survive on rice. Being a basic need, the absence of food (in this case, rice) can only lead to clenched fists and hunger fueled with anger. It is only a matter of time before another revolt is in the pipeline.

Wow...how sad. Thanks for informing us of your country's situation. I hope a good growing season will come your way.

So, in news reporter fashion, I dropped them an email. Here's part of the reply:

"April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and each year for the past 4 years, STARRY has placed this display of gold stars on the lawn at TBCH and the STARRY building on N Mays. Each star represents a Williamson County child that was confirmed by Child Protective Services to have been abused or neglected in the past year.

The stars have been placed with no explanation for the first several days in order to create exactly the question you raised. 'What's this all about?' Early next week, we will add two large banners explaining the purpose of the display..."

A gloomy subject, and an overcast day.

STARRY2

I suspect the photo editor for a newspaper would crop out most of the right margin. As a photo,I wanted the traffic on the right edge to show they chose a high traffic commute route for their display.

Thanks for the posting about the TBCH stars! I work in communications at this facility (Texas Baptist Children's Home). This is our "news" this month.

You're welcome to read more about what's going on with the stars and what our agencies are about at www.childrenatheartministries.org.
