Far too old for the assignment (and, as a moderator and judge, I can't really enter anyway) but here is an example from my files:

Wine Dregs #3

I had been enjoying a glass of wine outside and was struck by the shadows caused by the light passing through the glass and remnants of the alcohol.

DPS Assignment: Shadows

This past weekend at my family's cabin, we had incredible displays of long shadows as the sun went down over the lake.

Default Not for assignment

This is an HDR and therefore it does not contain EXIF information. The three separate photos that went into making this photo do contain their EXIF information and are available on my site.

I was trying to get a shot of specular surfaces juxtapositioned against muted shadows in the background.
