I'm as new as new can be.
I don't plan on making photography a business or an income. I simply want to take photos of the kids playing sports(indoor and outdoor sports) as well as family portraits while traveling. I thought I was good on getting a Canon 5D Markii as a starter camera even though I knew I wasn't going to need all of the features it probably has. Then, today, I learn more about the Pentax Kx and while I can easily afford the Canon, the Pentax seems like all that I need and not much more and it's waaaay cheaper. I'm not one to automatically buy a cheaper priced item b/c I know you get what you pay for but I can't seem to find any reason why I don't get a Kx(although I have no idea what lens will work best yet) Is there any reason why I shouldn't get the Kx? knowing that I'm not looking to become a professional photographer, just a simply want to capture the kids better than a camera phone does I can easily afford which ever camera I end up deciding on but that doesn't mean its the right choice of course. I don't want to buy more than I need just because I'm a guy and I like extra cool gadgets that I'll never use or understand.

I'm just going to say that the 5D is WAY up there if you are only wanting to shoot the kids!
If you want excellent quality and something that will last you a while (as far as skill), but don't want the cheapest beginner camera, you may want to look into a Canon 40D or 50D. The 40D has been discontinued but you can still probably pick up a new one. It is not something you will outgrow quickly, if anything it still might be too powerful for what you are wanting. I hear great things about the Rebel line (XS, XSI, XTI, T1i etc.) as well. Plus, keep in mind your brand selection. Pentax won't have as many lens choices as Nikon or Canon.

The pentax is the best low light high ISO crop sensor dSLR on the market right now. It would be a great purchase and gives many full frame cameras a run for their money. If I didn't have a pentax k20d I would pick on up. Grab a 30/35mm prime lens and have fun.
