I was benefitting from reading this thread, but as someone for whom money IS an option, I thought it may help to note that:

Nikon D40 is ~$460 USD
Canon EOS 1000D is ~$550 USD

depending on where to buy...

It may also help to note that:

Nikon D3000 (kit): $514.95 (amazon), which is the current model, like the 1000D (the 1000D was introduced Q2 of 2008. The D40 in A3 of 2006--head-to-heading them is not comparing apples to apples).

Nikon 50mm f/1.8D: $125.
Canon 50mm f/1.8: $98

Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S: $450.00
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM: $385.83

The Nikon 50/1.8 won't autofocus on the 40D; the f/1.4 will, while both Canon lenses will autofocus on the 1000D. Also, the XS will have a DoF preview button and mirror lock-up--both features that are missing from the D40/D60/D3000/D5000.

I'd recommend using the Wikipedia camera tables if you need to figure out where you are, tier/generation-wise with a specific model:You may also want to note that camera prices are dynamic. The older they get, the cheaper they become. For example, the T1i/500D when it premiered, cost $900 for the 18-55 kit. Today, nearly a year later, that same kit goes for $750 on Amazon. The 50D, when it first was released MSRPed (body only) at $1300. Today, it streets around $1000.
