I guess I'm a bit confused, then. Like I said...I haven't had a PS in forever, and even when I did, I only shot in Auto.
So manual controls aren't really worth it? I will be using the P&S primarily for out and about with my children. Anything else I want to take pics of will be done with my DSLR.

Damn the Strobist! I tellya, the ST-E2 is a perfect fit on a G9. High iso sux, though. If you don't want to blow $500 on a G11, a used G7 (no RAW) goes for around $350, a used G9 for $400-$450. You won't save much on a used G10, though. G prices, for some weird reason, tend to go up for a while after they're discontinued, not down. Not sure I'd recommend going back farther than the G7, since the G6 was unstabilized. Then again, it also had RAW, a flip-out screen, and remote capability, so you picks your battles.

Well, I know a person who had a similar problem as you have, having a secondary P&S so that you don't have to carry the bulky SLR all around. He got himself Panasonic FX150. It offers some manaul controls as well. You could look into that.
