I've got the same lens you have and I'll probably be buying the 55-200 VR next. It's probably a good option for more range.

Who says? If the likes of Scott Kelby think this is a good lens then I doubt anyone on here will argue differently. Well, I really don't doubt that with the internet being what it is and all, but for your "anything and everything" purposes, this lens will do just fine.

What do you think you'll be photographing mostly? People? Landscapes? Macros?

What's your price range?

Er, say what? The 55-200 VR (note: VR version! not the non-VR version) is a lovely lens. Can you explain that rather abrupt dismissal of the lens?

55-200mm VR if you have a low budget or you want something light. It's a very good lens for the price.

70-300mm VR if you have a little bit more money. Your feet can cover for the 55-70 gap.

Seconded. Make sure you get the VR version in either case, though.
