Default Nikon vs. Canon

The big question.... Which would you choose between and why? The Nikon D90 or the Canon 500d Rebel T1?

(Still looking to purchase a new camera, I have the D40 now - which I love - but would love something that has a better variation in lenses).

TIA!

For me the choice was very simple. Every Canon gear I get my hands on works the way I expect it to work. And, most importantly, I don't have to break my fingers in three places just to reach the buttons, press them, and rotate some wheel at the same time. With Nikon, I always get confused, and I can learn to use the stuff, but when I try to make sense of something new it always manages to work how I didn't expect it.

hmm funny to compare a D90 to a 500D.on the video part the d90 is better .but i think thats practically about it, you know.not much really seperates the 2 on the 500D the boutons are more professinaly placed it seems to me the D90 is a bit crmped ect.they also say that its a bit that the boutons are really bady strategecally placed.it also seems that the grip on the box isn't so great

Thanks guys! Good to hear comparisons from different people. The only DSLR I've had is the Nikon and I didn't have a specific reason I picked it for. Just had to start somewhere.

I'm always up for easier to use :-) Thanks for feedback on the buttons and such, I haven't actually had a chance to play with the Canon in store yet.

I have a D90 and love it. For me, the buttons and wheels are very easy to use and are intuitive. And the wheels are even customizable if you don't like the default settings. It fits my hand nicely.

For me, the big draw was the CMOS sensor and the ability to shoot at high ISO (1600 to 3200). Lots of flexibility there.

I have a Canon P&S and like that camera, too.

Does either Nikon or Canon feel more intuitive to you, and more comfortable in your hands? Doesn't seem to me that you can make a bad choice - you just need to make the choice that's right for you.

So true every Nikon I've stuck in my hands gave me the impression that button placement was an after thought.

Funny: I've always felt the same way about Canon, especially in the ##D bodies. I never understood why you would use one scroll wheel for one then that big giant wheel on the back for another. It's always been foreign to me. The two finger-located wheels on Nikon's higher-up bodies have always been natural.

WIth the INFO button on the D90 and D300s, now, you can get to everything with one hand.

Most reviewers prefer Nikon ergonomics to Canon.

Just to let you knowa camera's ergonomics and button layout may make sense for one person and not another. You need to decide that for yourself. I personally hate the way Canon cameras are layed out which is why I shoot nikon. It just fits me better.

What do you mean by better variation in lenses? If it's just the differences in lens selection, I wouldn't use this as a primary deciding factor in a purchase. Both manufacturers have a nice line up of lenses and unless there is a specific lens by one manufactuer (and not the other) that you absolutely have to have then this would be a very low point in the decision process.

As for ergonomics. I'm with Rex and Adam. I love the way the controls work on all the Nikons I've owned. For me, the ergonomics of the Nikon's is very intuitive and has never required much thought. On the other hand, I find myself continually frustrated by the controls on Canon bodies. I suspect that if I had started with Canon it might be the other way around, but it could be a major factor in your decision. And as Rex points out, not something anybody else can tell you. I'd go find one and hold it in your hands, and if you can shoot with each of them to see which one feels better to you.
