Default 50mm Lens Trouble / F EE error

I recently bought a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for my Nikon D90 and I'm having some trouble with the depth of field scale. If the ring is not stopped down to the minimum aperture of 22 I will get a F EE error. I'd greatly appreciate any help. I'm also new to the depth of field scale so maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

That is because in order to make the camera's computer control the lens you have to have it locked at the smallest aperature - in your case F/22. You then use aperature priority mode to set the f/stop by the dial on the camera body not the lens.

EXACTLY... you need to not only turn the ring to f/22 but also flick the luttle red tab so it physically is locked.
(you change the aperture using the command dial, not on the lens anymore like on a film slr)

i have also had an FEE when the lens was not mounted properly.. turn it all the way until you hear it click.
