Hi - Scouser -?
From other peoples raves, I'd suggest Canon or Nikon. Personally, I've an A300, which is ok, but I only get good results from an old Minolta 50mm that I've kept. The lens that came with it isn't much good, and my other longer lens isn't much better. My old Sony P93 was much better, much more often. I regret not going Canon.

I've read plenty of reviews and my head says Canon but the Sony has a bigger ISO range - up to 3200 and the guy in the shop I went to today said the Canon Live View isn't that useful and doesn't have built in image stabilisation which the Sony does

I think most people would suggest a canon or nikon because of the lenses if your going to add to them later. If you have friends with camera who have a lot of gear I would recomend getting the same make i.e. canon so you then have the ability to share their gear... of course if they will let you haha

i think not really, Sony SLR's at ISO 3200 had too much noise .
Canon 450D or 1000D is a better option with a long range lens choices .
Nikon D60 is reliable too .
do you prefer indoor / outdoor photography ?

Actually if you don't want to spend much money on your lenses the sony is the best option. For example you can get the excellent tamron 17-50 f2.8 and have IS (or sss as sony calls it). Also you might want to get some used lenses from ebay etc. and still you will get IS.

Im a beginner and personally find the Nikon D60 very user friendly but my friend is also a beginner and swears by her Canon (not the one listed here). I wish i'd gone for a Canon personally because my siblings and my dad all have SLR's that are Canons lol (my dad has a film one) and they all swap lenses lol

Oh well....oops! I like mine

Go canon or nikon, the 1000D(rebel xs where I am) is a great camera. I have one and it's truly satisfactory.
The Live View is useless, but I have found no use for it, good or bad I just haven't found any reason why I should use live view.
The ISO may go up to 3200 on the Sony, but that's sacrificing a few things for just some higher ISO.
Canon, or Nikon. Just stick with the 2 main brands because they have a much wider range of upgrades and accessories and different bodies.
But it's going to be your camera, so your choice.

thanks for all the feedback - the majority of reviews highly rate the Canon 1000D, my only concern being image stabilisation which is not built into the body but the lenses - Is this a big issue?
