Default Comparitave Models Nikon/Canon

Hey everyone,

So I've recently decided to upgrade from my canon p&s (which I love) to a dslr.

I feel I've got a pretty good grasp on which Nikon model would be best for me (and I'm leaning towards Nikon right now), but I'm having trouble figuring out what are the comparative Canon models.

I know Nikon goes
D40/D3000
D60/D5000
D80
D90
etc...

If someone could give tell me what the entry level Canons are and what Nikon models they compare to that would be great!

Thanks so much!
john

D40/D3000
D60/D5000
D80/D90
D200/D300/D300s

Is kind of like:

XS (1000D)
XT/XTi/XSi/T1i (350D/400D/450D/500D).
30D/40D/50D
7D

But the Canon tiers mostly come in between the Nikon ones, both features and pricewise. The 7D and D300s are probably the only two tiers that are strictly head-to-head.

The Canon 1000D is sorta-kinda between the D3000/D5000.
The Canon xxxD dRebels are sorta-kinda between the D5000/D90
The Canon xxD prosumers are sorta-kinda between the D90/D300s

...except $1000$2000 full frame and autofocusing Zeiss glass, EVIL cameras, rangefinders, pancake lenses, and your choice of color options for the camera body. Yup. Totally sewn up.

I think looking at the model timeline templates on the wikipedia is a useful way to compare camera lines:
