I don't know the exchange rate, but Pentax is coming out with a well-speced entry-level DSLR, the KX.

I often recommend the Nikon D40 -- or nowadays, the D5000 or D3000. They're great little cameras, relatively cheap (I don't know the exchange rate at all, sorry), very light to carry, and easy to use. I'd give them a try at a local store, if you have one that will let you try them!

Could you tell the exchange rate of Indian Rupees to US Dollars. That'd be really helpful.

According to Google...

RS. 40,000 = 835.24 USD.

Ok, so you are basically looking for a DSLR below 800 Dollars...what are your preferences, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus or Panansonic.

Well generally to me your first choice "could" be Sony as you own one right now.

Look into:

1) Sony A550 (its above your price range but if you get a bargain then its an AWESOME camera -- newest in the Sony line) Sony DSLR A550 Hands-on Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
2) Sony A500 Sony Alpha DSLR-A500 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
3) Sony A350 Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
4) Sony A300 Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
5) Sony A200 Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review

I wouldn't recommend A330, A230 and A380 as they are TOO much of BEGINNER DSLR and to me aren't good enough.

For Canon see:

1) 50D Canon EOS 50D digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
2) 500D Canon EOS 500D digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
3) 1000D Canon EOS 1000D / Digital Rebel XS digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review

As for Nikon:

1) D60 Nikon D60 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review ; Nikon D60 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
2) D90 (a really awesome camera, very user friendly) Nikon D90 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review ; Nikon D90 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
3) D3000 Nikon D3000 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review
4) D5000 Nikon D5000 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review ; Nikon D5000 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

All of the cameras are either below your price range or maybe above your price range a bit. But if you can bargain and get it to be within your price range then TA-DA !!

Hope that i haven't confused you with all the links
Take your time to decide.
Good Luck

KazeFox provided you some excellent links.

I personally prefer Nikon's or Sony's. I have a D90 right now and i couldn't be happier with it. Just play with the cameras at a store and make a decision.

Where have you been for the last 2 years?

What do you shoot? What length do you want? not sure what you have available to you, but it's hard to go wrong with anything Nikkor AF prime.

50mm f/1.8D AF and and 35mm f/1.8G AF-S are probably the most common and cheap, especially if you don't know what you want. There are others that some prefer for portrait (85mm, even 105mm,..), there are more expensive fast lenses (50mm 1.4G, 85mm 1.4, ..,) There are many options. You can start with the cheapest 50mm f/1.8 to see if it suits your needs and then go from there.
