Hello!
I got some money and I wanna buy new DSLR to start having fun with photography. Always had compact Canon IXus and now using freind's EOS 350D and its time ti finally buy somethign own. Well i have few options and would like to hear what u think about it,cause every advice will be helpfull, so here i go: 1.)Canon Eos 40d -> Its 5.500 kn (Im in Croatia), its around 1.070$. Its body only and will get Kit 18-55 IS from friend for 70 $ so if i choose 40d it will cost me 1.150 $. I think this one is great but many people talk about problems with error99 and shutter problems after only 8ooo shots. So its kinda hard to really say ill buy it cause itc obviously some of them have problems. 2.)Nikon D5000 -> 1.245$ with Kit lens 18-55 VR. There are some problems with it do its off the market for now but in a 20 days they should have new ones. 3.)Canon Eos 450D ->1.000 $ mabye less around 950$.. again with kit lens 18-55 IS. 4.)Nikon D90 -> little too expensive for me right now...1560$ with 18-55 VR so i guess this one is out unless i decide to save extra money but dont think so. Other thing that would be nice if i decide to egt Canon is that friend have Canon system so i could borrow few things from him until i get my own...if i decide for Nikon that wont be possible.....and if i choose 450d I can afford tripod with it so its nice combination too... Would like to hear what all of you people think about that.... Thank you! |

the advise when i was camera shopping and trying to decide between canon and nikon was to go try them both out and see what felt better in your hands........but if you can have access to some canon gear that might be the seller. good luck.

I have the Nikon D40 and love it.
Check out each camera at a store to see how they feel in your hand. The Canon would work out well as your friend already owns one and can share in your learning experience, not to mention the sharing of lenses ect. It's always nice to have someone with you on your photoshoots and comparing your results. My opinion = Go with a Canon and enjoy photography with your friend. I own Nikon, but both are top notch Cameras.

Thank you for advices.
I decided to get Eos 40D but Im worried about that Error99 and shutter problems so thats only thing that makes me think a little more. Also other thing is that here in Croatia theres no store where u can go and try what u wanna buy. Its usually decide what want, pay and then wait till u get it. Dont have to say that sometimes u dont get anything and theres a lot of problems with that.

I have the 40D, and close to 20k shots with no problems. I have never had the Error 99, but I have seen it on other bodies (50D, 20D), and it is usually a problem with dirty lens contacts.

1) Buy the brand which has better service and/or lens & accessories in Croatia.
2) If it is for a hobby then consider Canon 450D or Nikon D5000. For serious photography then get the Canon 40D or Nikon D90. 3) Canon or Nikon. Your friend's Canon may be a factor but I recommend Canon for better selection of Canon lenses and Nikon for better metering and low noise high ISO sensor. |

About service i dont know about Nikon but i know if something happens to your Canon it goes pretty slow and u have to wait for about few weeks....your camera is being sent all over the country and its annoying...and about lens and accessories i think its about the same...u can get almost all u need for both of them.
Yeah it is for hobby and I am starter in DSLR world had Canon Ixus 750 before. Just dont like D5000 to much cause it seems quite complicated with those settings.. you dont have buttons on the outside so u have to go to menu to change almost everything so Im aiming for D90 for now if we talk about Nikon. About Canon that error scared me a little and 450D is just little below something i would want. D40 had many err99 issues here around me so my first choice is D90 and finally decided....I hope ill manage to get that extra money i need to afford it... Thank u for advices for now and if u have more please write to me. Thanks people and I wish u great light to all (not sure if u say that like we here)

IMO Canon is better, no matter 40d/50d.
