Monopod+VR, I never hand-hold the big guns. For one thing, I wouldn't be able to do it for a whole day.

I found this lens on www.borrowlenses.com if you click here.

This company has an almost perfect rating on the Reseller Ratings site, and this company has even been used on some of the bloggers on DPS.

Hope this helps!

If you're going for a 600/4, I'd also recommend renting a tripod that's up to the weight and a Wimberly head if you don't have them.

Thanks inkista, I've got the tripod and head covered already, but I've tried several monopods and haven't found one I like. Mostly I am photographing wildlife, so I need something sturdy, light, and quick to extend or retract. If you or anyone else has a recommendation I'd love to hear it.

Thanks natek, that is one I was wondering about since they have the lens. Just found out I have to be out of the country on business soon, so I'll try renting this lens when my schedule will allow me to test it.

I use an Induro MXA34, what kind of features are you looking for?

Something strong enough to hold this level of lens, quick to open and close. Not sure I can find it, but a type of quick release for the lens would be nice. My hikes are normally short, two or three miles, so weight is only a small consideration.

You'll probably need to get a head in order to have a quick release, which introduces another potential weak point. Personally, I prefer simply screwing the monopod directly into the lens, it's rock solid, and won't easily come loose. If I'm walking with it, I just rest the monopod on my shoulder. I don't often find myself taking the lens off the monopod.

All the Induro gear uses twist-locks, which are a little bit slower than the flip-style levers on Manfrottos, but they're just as secure, and cheaper.
