Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax?

Someone asked what I'm considering and why not the Olympus or Pentax. The reason is that I want to go for something that is freely available in the area I'm staying in. It seems like Nikon and Canon is dominating the field here. I haven't seen much other brands. The pentax I saw was at a photo printing shop, and thats the ONLY dlsr they have. No extra lenses, nothing. It's mainly a photo print shop.

I was going to recommend Pentax (k200d or even better an older k10d) for it's value for money and a fairly good system (lenses are really not a problem... there are more avaliable than you can buy... even in the high-end class; a stronger flash system wouldn't hurt though). But you have to consider customer support... whether there's a good licenced repair shop near you.
So in your list I'd go for Canon 1000d or even better a 450d (if the price different is not too big in your country...).
Low end Nikons (D40, D40x, D60) just have too many compromises (can't AF on older lenses, no cable remote). If you can get hands on an older D80 model however, you can get great camera for decent price.

eish, prop the D90, but what do i know, I'm also a newbie. Someone told me that the D40 is a good place to start and I'm seriously thinking of the D40, not even the D60, just because of the price difference.
