Default Gear update - Advices needed

Hi all,
First of all, I hope I am in the right section

I have the canon eos 1000D with the kit lens efs 18-55 IS.

I would like to move further ( a bit).

I don't know how to move on.

1) Should I invest in a better body? I don't really care about the brand (Nikon, Canon etc)
2) Should I buy a new better lens?
3) Maybe both?

-My budget is maximum 1300$
-I love to shoot cityscapes, landscapes, vehicles and I also like photo journalism.

Thanx in advance

Why do you need new gear? What isn't your current equipment allowing you to do?

You should buy some education. That could be books, seminars, etc. Only once you have learned everything about your current camera and can't progress, then think about upgrades.

Otherwise, you might end up with "mices" in your cupboards instead of food.

@OsmosisStudios you have absolutely right to ask that!
This is a great question and it truly needs "pages" of discussion.

Firstly, sometimes I miss some good zoom possibilities. This is why I ask about lenses as well. I would also like to know the options (let's say at mid-level dslrs).

The budget maximum is for informational and hopefully future purposes

Good suggestion, but a lot of time it isn't possible. For wildlife, for rough country, for lake, river, seashore - there have been many instances in my life when zooming with my feet meant walking off a cliff or stepping into a fast flowing river. And most wildlife simply doesn't sit still while you walk up on it. A zoom lens with a 200 or 300mm top end can make the difference between getting the photo and not getting it.

You haven't answered the question...except wanting zoom capability.

What do you want to take pictures of with the zoom? Why would that necessitate a new body?

I have a bunch of zooms, each works best for a certain situation/subject they all fit on any Nikon body.

It doesn't need pages of discussion. it needs a short but succinct explanation of what your needs are.

"miss some good zoom possibilities" <- What does this mean? You need more focal length or less? Do you need to go wider or longer? What are you shooting? under what lighting conditions? Where? What do you want to do with the images when you get home? You have a budget, but what do you want from it? One lens? Seven? What kind of lenses?

You still didnt answer what it is that the camera is preventing you from doing. Is it preventing you from getting closer? From getting further back?

I need to go closer, not wider. I shoot especially at night. Something that I really miss when I edit the photo later is to be able to crop enough, without losing quality.
