Find a camera store. Go try out their entry-level models. Enjoy.

One thing I would suggest is that you purchase a camera you will grow with. I know a lot of people who purchase expensive SLR cameras and never take them off of automatic - what a waste of money! I also know a lot of people who purchase inexpensive point and shoot cameras, take a camera class, realize they love taking pics and have now outgrown the camera. Look around for a photography class you can take and/or a photography club that will let you join them on a photo outing to see what you want to buy.
