What do your friends shoot?
Being able to share/swap gear can be an important factor in this decision.

Nah, just picking on you. I'm in the same boat. I would love to take all kinds of different pictures, but in my thread that I started, I tried to narrow it down to a select few importances over the rest. I'm actually considering the Canon T3i, but I haven't made any decisions. It really is a difficult process, I think. Take your time and read a bit! But, when it comes down to it, based on the pictures I've seen (videos too!), reviews I've read and watched, etc... you really can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon overall. I hope you're able to make a decision eventually. Keep us posted, it's always interesting and helpful to read other people's posts/threads when they're trying to buy their first DSLR. Given what you're listing as subjects, either system will be good for you. There are only two pieces of advice I can give you.
Between the D90 and the D5100, decide if autofocus is a big priority for you. It typically is only necessary if you're shooting fast-moving subject matter. If you have time to take the shot and your eyesight is good, manual focusing isn't that big of a deal. But the D5100 does not have a focus motor in it, and will only autofocus with AF-S lenses, and there are still some lenses in the Nikon lineup that do not have AF-S. If you want to use one of those lenses to shoot fast action, the D5100 could be an exercise in frustration. For example, if "nature" means wildlife/birds, and you're getting the D5100 or T3i, I would recommend leaning towards the T3i because the Nikon 80-400 VR is AF (NOT AF-S), and the Canon 100-400 IS autofocuses on any Canon dSLR. If you want to get into studio-type portraits Strobist-style with off-camera flash, the D90 and the T3i have a flash commander/master in the pop-up. The D5100 doesn't.

I suggest you try a couple of your friends cameras...Canon and Nikon have pretty different "thought processes" in their controls. Canons tend to be pretty menu dependent (but lower level Nikons are almost as bad).... If neither "works better"/ "feels better" for you then either will do.

Go to a camera store and hold each, some have completely different feels that might fit in your hand or feel awkward.
