Well, if your budget is only $1000, then that leaves the D90 out of the equation, unless you buy it used. Another thing to think about is whether that budget includes all the other stuff you will need, from camera bag to tripod, filters to flash. There's so much more to buying a camera then just the camera itself.

Where are you getting these prices?

And what is a "cheap studio set"?

Brand new, a D90 w/18-105mm from B&H Photo runs $1149.

Dear Inkista,

I hate my D5100, i think you should not propose him D5100. D5100 is EXTREMELY VERY REALLY SUPER MUCH MUCH MUCH more expensive than D7000 for long run.

For better saving, i would choose Canon.

I see a lot of people in my country, who earn USD3000- USD5000 (every month) as part-time photographers. Some of them even don't have on-camera speedlights. I wander how this can happen... ????????? Some wedding photographers even have only 1 on-camera speedlight to do everything, without other equipments. Does this happen in your place too? I wander how come they earn so much money without lighting props.. etc etc..

You've griped about your dislike for the D5100 constantly and in all sorts of threads: everything you've mentioned has been something that you didnt research, were expecting too much from, or is otherwise your own fault/problem.

Just because you didnt do your homework, or were expecting far too much from a camera, doesnt mean everybody else will. Stop recommending things you dont understand.

You'll always find someone who is making a ton of money part time and has no idea what they're doing.

What if they're landscape photographers... Would they need a speedlight then?

That's why I'd suggest D90 It might be older but is better than entry-level cameras because it has an autofocus motor, larger and brighter viewfinder and better handling.

Take your time and choose carefully, for the brand that you buy into, is probably the brand you will remain with for the future. Both Canon and Nikon have great reuptations and great products and you cannot go too far wrong with either brand you choose.

Having said that, I am a Nikon user and thus cannot comment on the Canon. Of the two Nikon products you have mentioned, I would tend towards the D5100 rather than the D90. The D90 has been "replaced" by the D7000 on the upper end and the D5100 on the lower end. Have a look at the specs of all three (D90, D5100 and D7000) and decide if there are any "have-to-have" features that you require that are not included in any of the models. (remember that all "have-to-haves" and "nice-to-haves" are all trade-off against price/value.

The D5100 and D7000 are newer technology with a different sensor to the D90. Check your budget and go for the lowest priced body that serves your immediate needs, rather spending any extra budget you may have on the best lenses you can afford. Don't forget all the little extras that you may need such as extra battery, external flash, tripod, remote release, etc. The chances are that, if you really catch the photographic bug, you will replace any camera body you buy now in the next couple of years, but if you buy the best lenses you can afford, you will probably use them for many years to come....
