I am struggling with the decision to upgrade!* Heres my situation, I have a olympus e300 with a grip and a nice flash.* My fastest lens currently is a 14-54mm f2.8-3.5* My main focus of shooting is live bands (no flash)* I want to buy a couple of new lenses (a super wide angle, 30mm 1.4 or 1.8 and 70-200 f2.8) but I dont want to sink more money in to olympus gear because they seemed to of quit making 4/3rds mounts and are focusing on the PEN line.* Plus my autofocus is horribly slow unless its sunny out, and lots of noise @ 1600 iso.* I'm beating my self up over this decision!* IF i do upgrade Im most interested in the D7000/5100 or Canon 60D.
Thanks for your time, Brian |

Hey, it happens. Moving to APS-C gear will give you better high iso performance, and access to a bunch of fast primes you can't really find on the Olympus side of the fence (sigh).
Just keep in mind that Canon and Nikon gear don't have in-body stabilization, and you're going to have to learn the 1/focal_length rule to avoid camera shake blur. And make sure you won't weep about the fact that all the Canikon zooms max out at f/2.8. Another option (unlikely to appeal to you) is to get a PEN and a 4/3 -> m4/3 adapter so you can use the lenses you've already invested in. Also, on the Nikon side, the D3100 and D5100 do not have focus motors. That means the only lenses they will autofocus with are the ones with a silent wave motor (i.e., designated as "AF-S"). If the lens is designated as "AF", you'll have to manually focus it. And, unfortunately, the primes is where Nikon doesn't yet have a lot of affordable AF-S choices. There's a 50/1.4, a 50/1.8, and a 35/1.8, but after that, the only primes with AF-S are in the $1k+ pro lineup. They're working their way down from the top. ![]() If it's a D90 or above body with a focus motor (D7000 counts, there), it'll autofocus with AF lenses as well as AF-S. Canon, it's no big deal. The lens will autofocus on any of the dSLR bodies regardless of whether it's got USM or not.
