Question Travelling Budget DSLR camera choice help

Hello,

I am currently looking into buying a very cheap entry level dslr camera. I'm going travelling and whilst I want this camera to last, I need to be able to not go completely mental if it gets stolen. I'm looking to spend around £250. I know thats very low but I was wondering if there are some reasonbly good value for money ones available.

I'll be visiting south america - including a lot of time in patagonia in Chile, so probably will be taking lots of landscape shots. I'm willing to buy the lens seperatetly, rather than as part of a kit if its a better deal. I don't care about being able to shoot video on it. Something which isn't too heavy would also be ideal.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I'd go for a used very old entry-level dSLR. Maybe a Canon XT/350D, or a Nikon D40 or D40x. Those are around your price point, and you might even be able to grab one with the 18-55 kit lens, which should work for landscape shots. If you go for the XT, the silver ones are waaaay cheaper than the black ones. They look a lot cheaper, so they'll be less of a theft target, too.

Have a good time! I was still shooting film when I went down to Santiago and then Ushaia on the way to Antarctica. Patagonia is beautiful. I'd have loved to have had a digital camera then.

Thanks for the info. I could potentially go up to £300.

I was just looking at the Canon EOS 1000D EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (non IS) Lens Kit. Anyone know how this compares to the Nikon D3000 ? Thanks.

Pretty similar specs. Biggest difference is probably that the 1000D will autofocus with all the EOS lenses (D3000 only autofocuses if the Nikon lens has AF-S. Probably will only make a big difference if you get an AF lens, and want to shoot fast action with it, or have bad eyesight and need to rely on AF to focus for you. Manually focusing can be accurate, but it's slower than autofocusing).

Are you implying that down here in South America it's not a safe place?
I'd avice you to be careful with your personal belongings, but it's not that bad of a place...

I know of a guy here in Argentina who's selling a complete Sony A200 kit (Club Sony Alpha Argentina • Identificarse) for ARS 2.500 (USD 588 aprox)
