Default Help! Which digital camera to buy? Ready to enter the world of photograpy

Guys,
This will be the first time I will take this hobby a bit more seriously. All I currently take are blackberry photographs! I am looking to buy a digital camera that is simple enough that I may understand it, yet sophisticated such that I may take some cool photographs and work on special effects (movement, lighting, zoom, colouring, etc).
What would you recommend? I want to buy the camera this week when I will be in NYC and the following week I will begin a photography course here in São Paulo (Brazil).
Thank you!!!
Fefis

Start out low. Check out the entry-level Nikons and Canons. I'm a Nikon shooter, so I'll suggest a D3100.
