Default Nikon D90 or Canon EOS 550d

Hello,

i am upgrading my camera from advanced point n shoot to a DSLR. After some research, I have shortlisted 2 of them:

Nikon D90 with kit lens 18-105 mm
Canon EOS 550d/Rebel T2i with kit lens 18-135 mm

I have to choose between these 2 price not withstanding.

Pls. recommend.

Thanks.

I have a D90 (about 9mths old) it's a great camera I absolutely love it and have just upgraded to a D7000 , but if you can extend your budget to a D7000 you won't be sorry. Just google the reviews.

I hope you are aware that the D90 is now listed as officially discontinued on the Nikon Japan website. More details here. Having said that, I think that the D90 is an absolute gem of a camera. I know because I own one.

As an upgrade from a point & shoot, it would be a huge jump for you. I upgraded from the Canon SX 20 IS to the Nikon D40 four years ago and then upgraded again to the D90 about a year back. Even being used to the D40, the sheer control you have in a D90 class camera is a little overwhelming at first. The reason for my upgrade was that these controls were missing (or not directly/easily accessible) on the D40. You may really want to look at a lower version like the D3100 as first time SLR user. It is quite good and a LOT cheaper.

However, if you do decide to buy a D90, I am sure you will have a wonderful time using it. I cannot speak for the Canon as I have never used it, so you might want to wait for a Canon user's opinion.

I'm a Canon shooter, but I'd have to say the D90 is a better option if you're starting from scratch. The 550 is really more of an entry-level camera (comparable to something like a D60). I think you'll find the 550D to be a good feature-for-feature match for the 90D, but it's not quite as nice in terms of build quality or usability. In those respects, the D90 is really more comparable to something like Canon's 50D.

Having said that, it's important that you try each of them out, if possible, to see which fits better in your hand, and whether you find the control layout better on either of them.
