I don't know about that camera, but why wouldn't you stick in the Canon line for lense purposes and you already know the menu system etc. to teach her

i started on a 1000D because my other half has a 30D id definatly recomend it as a entry level camera, not too prices and nice and light, plus you will be able to share equipment

On British TV a few nights ago, the Nikon D3100 with 18-55 lens was considered about the best entry camera.

If she is living with you (assume she is) get her a Canon. That way you can share accessories and both get the benefit.

The Pentax is a great camera, especially for someone with smaller hands as it's body is smaller and more comfortable in hand (in my experience). I'd take her into a camera store and get her to handle a couple of cameras and see which one she feels more comfortable handling.

I'm a Canon guy going back to 35mm film, so my opinion is biased. lol One of my sons thought he wanted to get a little deeper into photography, so I bought him a used Canon XT body and gave him my 18-55mm kit lens. I figured that would allow him to learn more about aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings without breaking the bank. I could also more easily answer some of his questions, because of a basic familiarity with the Canon dSLRs. If he does ever get serious about it, he will have a good foundation and can grow with the hobby.

A friend of mine asked me this question since she wants to move up to a DSLR. I have a Nikon D90. I chose mine because of all the different things it'd let me do and I played around with a few others in the camera store, researched online and got hooked on this one. My friend just wants a simple DSLR to leave on auto and take better pictures than her p & s. I suggested the Sony A series. They are cheaper and I was thinking "Why spend all that money on a camera just to leave it on auto and chase your kids around?" lol!

I'm not sure a dSLR on full auto will actually take better pictures than a good point & shoot. Getting the most out of one requires a certain commitment to the craft.
