I have the Canon 100D and don't find the weight an issue at all. Like other before me I'd recommend getting your daughter a Canon so you can share lenses - better for the bank balance.
My daughter is getting into photography as well and occasionally borrows my camera. If I'm ever financial enough I'd upgrade myself (with another Canon) and give her my 1000D.

Though I personally like the Sony, the Canon T2 is affordable at $599, and light. Comes with a lens and battery, and will work with all you have now. It uses a SD memory card, but they are reasonable too.
