Compact Recommendation

Hi all,
I'm in the market for a compact/pocket camera around approx. $500. I have a Canon DSLR and this one will be used also by my wife, but I also want good flexibility and control. Can anyone recommend a few good ones for me to look at?

A Canon G12 may be a good place to start.
Very easy (you don't need to go into menus to change the basics) to use and good IQ (except at high ISO).
Only downside it is not as small as some other compacts.
(I own a G11, its predecessor)
