Wow, that's a tough call! Two excellent marques with a strong loyally base for each. For some, it would be easy. If you either own some of the peripheral equipment for one over the other, the obvious choice would be to stay and go with that brand. Would be really tough for me though, being that we have both fairly well equipped platforms. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. If you are doing mainly portrait work, I would have to give it to the Canon. That, along with an excellent selection of somewhat more affordable quality lenses (not that Nikon lenses are not equally good..they just seem to cost more for equals) If your focus was more sports or wildlife photography, Nikon with it's better focusing system would have to be the winner. Another plus for Nikon would be the ease of function changes...mostly quick switch changes on the body. So, that's my rather long answer that really didn't answer your question

Depends entirely on usage.

+1.
D700 is a better all-rounder, particularly if you're going to be doing fast-action shooting, but older in design and doesn't do video. 5DMkII is the new darling of the cinematic world as the only full frame to do hd video, and is wonderful for slower shooting (studio, portraits, landscapes) that requires higher resolution (21MP vs. 12MP) and/or high iso performance. The Sony Alpha A850 is probably the best in terms of resolution (24MP), low iso performance, and dynamic range. [i.e., has the edge for landscape shooters if you can afford the Zeiss ZA lenses]. The resolution and video stuff is likely to level out more with the next generation of these cameras.

If its not a Nikon, its not really a camera
![]() All kidding aside I think both are great cameras, but since I own a D700 you know where I stand. If you want video you are better of getting a dedicated video camera as well - they really do a much better job.
