When I bought my Canon 1-1/2 years ago the sales people I talked to at B&H and Adorama both said that there wasn't that much difference either Canon or Nikon in bodies or glass. Both stores said resell on Nikon was a little higher but there was more available used glass for Canon. With that being said, I went with Canon because it was a little cheaper at the time and I felt in the future if I wanted a better lens I might be able to pick up a used one a little cheaper for the Canon. I have since learned that Tamron, Tokina, & Sigma all make top notch glass for both models at a lower cost so if you don't not have to have camera-lens name match you might want to look at a third party lens in the future.

I bought the D3100 about 2 months ago and loved it( my first dslr ) I liked the way it felt in my hands and not knowing anything about it the guide menu was great.
I ended up giving the D3100 to my wife and went and got a D90. WOW! its so much faster and feels so much more like a brick compared to the D3100(in a good way) and all the extra options make changing things so much faster and easier. If you have a good sense of all the camera functions then I think you will get bored of the D3100 pretty fast, the best thing about it is it is great for beginners that know nothing about aperture, shutter speeds, ect. because of the guide mode. If you have an understanding of all those basics I would look at the next step. I got lucky and found my D90 + Tokina 28-70 f2.8 used w/ 5000 actuations for less than I paid for the D3100 + kit. on Craigslist. If your that undecided then maybe try used at a better price then sell it later to upgrade. Good luck with your choices

How can you not fall for those sexy, big, white Canon "L" series lenses?
Seriously, though. Even though I have been a Canon fan since I got my first Canon AE-1 Program back in '84, when I was looking at getting back into photography earlier this year I was being swayed toward Nikons because of the built-in wireless flash capabilities of the ones in my price range. But with the introduction of the T3i, Canon gives me that in the same price range, and it ads the swiveling monitor screen. And I tell you what, the swiveling screen may not seem that important...until you need it, and then you'll be glad to have it. This is an ongoing battle: Canon vs Nikon. But in reality, there is no comparing a T3i and a D3100 they are two very different beasts. A better somparison would be a Nikon D90 vs the T3i, or the D3100 vs the Canon Rebel XS or T3.
