Default New camera input wanted

Im looking to purchase a digital slr. Im leaning towards the Nikon D3100. I want to take portrait type photos. Any experience with this camera or any other cameras will be appreciated.

What do you want to know about it? It's a competent entry-level body that, with the right technique, can produce exceptional images.

As is the case with any camera body.

How does it compare to other brands? Does anyone have pros/cons with this camera? Im looking at some package deals. Any recommendations as far as lens?

THey'll also do well: it really depends on the photographer. Unless you know specifically what you're going to be shooting (more specifically than "portraits") then we can't really help that much.

Do you want to use flash? In a studio or on location? How many people at a time? what kind of portraiture? What is your budget? WHat are your other requirements?

Well the kit Im considering is offered at best buy. They have several options of lens. The 70-300 is just under $1,000. Budget wise Im stetching it with this one.

I want to take portrait photos of wife and grandchildren at home or out and about. I want a decent camera that I can eventually add to as far as flash, other lens etc. Guess what im trying to determine now is whther or not i need the telephoto lens now or not.

also is nikon as good as say canon? Im thinking its more like a chevy vs ford thing. mostly individual preference ?

For a beginning photographer (new to dslr) yes it is a chevy/ford thing. The D-3100 will do a fine job of teaching you what you need to do the kind of photography you want to do. You can always trade it in on a more advanced body. I would spend the money on a "fast" lens in the 80-100 mm range if portraits is going to be my main focus. The combos can be attractive but not if they don't come with the lens (the most important part and one that will fit your next camera body) that you need. Get a base model body and if you are doing portraits then I would invest in a speedlight and the nikon brand. But Canon makes some exceptional lenses for portrait work so don't dismiss them without at least holding one as it may fit you better. Your lens is primary though and as such you should do quite a bit of research both on the web and in the book store before you plunk down hard earned cash.
