Hi,
I am looking to buy Canon 60D and went through the bundles (cameras + lens etc packages) that Jessops and Digit Rev offer on their respective websites. Since i have never bought a dSLR camera before, so i researched a bit over internet and read quite a few reviews on different websites. So now it came down to which retailer should i purchase it from? Jessop or Digit Rev I heard both of them have fairly good reputation but would appreciate if anyone can share their personal purchase and aftersale experience. Cheers, |

Canon 60D, nice camera.
You may or may not be aware of the term grey stock which I suspect Digital Rev supply. I suggest you read about their terms and conditions of use and sales and the company statement. They are based in Hong Kong, which would suggest is not "UK stock", and they use the term "Customs" under there T&Cs. Possibly why they are able to sell products at such a difference price tag to other companys. I have a friend that purchased a memory card from them, and when a fault occured he had to return it to China. Of course a 12 month warranty will be supplied with this product which is honoured by Digital Rev, but if you should need to contact Canon UK for any reason for support they will not offer any if the item should be grey. I suggest if you are buying this camera and new to Photography to buy it from someone who is able to offer help when needed. Jessops are the biggest UK Photographic retailer on the high street so suggest you take a visit to one of their stores, at least you can "touch and feel" before you buy. |

I have purchased a few lenses from Digital Rev (Australia) and they have been ok.
As tyanton says. It all depends if you want to take a gamble on the warranty and the possibility of returning the camera/lens back to China for repair or replacement. All my camera body purchases have been from local retailers.

Identical cameras/lenses except the grey one is not imported by the official importer, or manufacturer. There may be no local support, including warranty, from the local official importer.
For example Canon may not want to know you as you did not purchase the camera through official channels.

As Richard says it won't be supported by Canon UK for support. There may be other issues, I have heard of instruction manuals to be supplied in other languages, such as Chinese. These can be downloaded of course but may be a charge for this.
Also, if a fault should occur with the unit under warranty, you may have to ship it back to another country, believe it to be the the case from this retailer. This can be costly, time consuming, and frustrating if you have to contact someone who speaks/understands little english. How many times have you phoned someone at your bank or a service providor and end up speaking to someone in India and there being a communicatiom issue, lots in my case. I am no novice to Photography but still buy my hardware locally and ask for a local price match, Jessops do price match against UK stock, local to the stores, at least I can speak to someone face to face rather than over the phone if anything should happen. I do look to save with the accessories though as I am very specific to my needs, well thats what I tell the misses..... |
