You're going to need really, really good lighting to stop action while zoomed that distance. If you've got good enough lighting that you can shoot with a shutter speed of 1/400 or faster, you might get decent results with the Canon.

The two things the DSLR gives you that the P&S will never give you are a bigger / better sensor and the ability to spend an unlimited amount of money buying the huge lenses you'll need for stop-action sports photography.

If there's any way you can rent or borrow one or both of these and try them out, that would be a big help, because you can start to see how they react in the conditions you're shooting in.

I say go for the 75-300 telephoto zoom lens. The P&S is likely to suffer from shutter lag, which means it's going to be hard to time fast-action shots exactly. No point in having the reach if all you're going to do is end up pushing the button a quarter of a second too late.

I also say go with the zoom lens. I had the Canon PowerShot SX10, heck of a zoom, but the shutter speed is just too slow for fast action shots and you need really good lighting to get good shots.
