Those two cameras are pretty different. Did you want a dSLR? Or did you want a mirrorless compact?

And the answer is Sony A33 or A560. Same cool features as the NEX like in body stabilization and sweep panorama but in a more SLR like package. The A560/580 are SLR's like the T1i but with all of the sony stuff that makes the NEX a winner and the A33/A55 are called SLT. Half way in between a SLR and the mirror less NEX. If you are coming from the point and shoot world the A33 has more of the features you would be used to while retaining almost all of the advantages of an SLR.

The real question is to ask yourself how far you want to go with your photography and why you want a DSLR. When you buy a camera you are also buying into a system. Lenses and flashes are not really compatible across brands. Also realize that there will be a learning curve and that having a DSLR does not always make better pictures. Often they can make much worse pictures. Inkista has posted many times about why most people should really just buy a good P&S camera instead of an SLR.

I have a Canon SX20is point and shoot camera. It has a very long zoom (500 mm eq) and full manual controls and a flash shoe. It is truly 95% of what I needed and can take great shots with less skill than my SLR. The 4 reasons I bought an SLR was: to gain RAW capability and learn to process it, faster in every way, able to take shallow depth of field pictures, I was ready for the next level (at least I thought I was)

I still carry my SX20 often. It is lighter and more flexible than my DSLR but slower to operate and shoot. I am also not as concerned about it getting stolen or damaged while on vacation. Most people cannot tell the difference between pictures taken with it or my Sony unless thay are into photography themselves. It also has a longer zoom and better macro capability than any lens I currently have for my SLR. All without ever changing a lens.

I basically want an SLR to take much better photos of family, such as my son...whom i LOVE to snap photos of.......and to take awesome MACRO shots....my point and shoot does okay with MACRO...but just not near as good as an SLR.........I found an awesome deal on the Canon...and i took the plunge and bought it a little bit ago...there is a return policy on it though if i dont like it...i have 30 days to take it back.

Sounds good.

The Sony NEX is similar to a dSLR in many ways: same sensor size, similar image quality and performance, but it's a much much newer system, it's physically smaller and lighter, and the lens selection just isn't there yet.

Going with a Canon means more bulk and weight, but a ton more options to choose from lens-wise, and third-party accessory-wise. A dSLR is a better general-purpose tools than a mirrorless compact right now. In a few years, this balance may tip, but because the mirrorless compacts are so new, the systems haven't had time to "build out" yet, whereas the dSLRs are leveraging decades of compatible-mount film lenses, too.

With macro, though, you might be disappointed at first. With a dSLR, you're probably going to need a dedicated macro lens, because of the larger sensor requiring larger lenses that actually have minimum focus distance limits, unlike P&S cameras, where the tiny sensor also meant tiny lenses that could focus very closely.
