Default Caring for compact system camera

Hi,

I used to use a film SLR, and then went compact digital, I've only recently been able to afford to be more manual with my digital photography. I bought a Samsung NX5 (budget version of the NX10). The guy in the store was explaining the difference between the DSLR and the compact systems camera, and about how the csc doesn't have a mirror. He also said that this meant that the sensor didn't have the protection of the mirror, from light for example. He said that leaving the lens off for a while would damage the sensor.

I wondered whether there was any other advice anyone could give on making sure my sensor is as protected as possible. Is it best to take the lens off every time I use it and put the caps on? Or leave the lens on? And will is cause the sensor any harm if I were to leave the lens cap off for a long time while shooting?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Bex

The salesman is full of it: your sensor is fine. I wouldnt leave it out in the sun all day or anything, but you'll be fine.

Again, I second this... and I'd add, always turn your camera off before you remove a lens.. lessen the amount of static inside... maybe... *is this actually scientifically proven?*

Phew, I'm pleased to hear I've been panicking too much. When you spend a big stack of cash on things you want to treat them well so it's god to hear I don't need to mother it too much.

Thanks very much for your relies.

Electrical current through a wire creates a magnetic field around the wire that attracts things based on their polarity. A sensor is basically just a bunch of wires and, with power running through them, they would create a strong focal point for magnetism. It most certainly does attract things, though I dont know about how badly dust would be affected.
