Default Canon vs Sony

A friend of mine wants to know why Canon is better than Sony when it comes to digital cameras, but I totally blanked out on it lol, so why is Canon better? I remember reading a ton of negative reviews on Sony Cybershots (that's the camera she just bought and she had the same camera twice before). I also had a Cybershot before my Canon T1i, but it totally messed up in the snow.

Canon has more lenses available and they are not as limited and expensive as Sony.
All around.....Canon is just a better camera. Sony makes great entertainment systems, playstations and such, but their cameras suck (sorry to those DPSers who own Sony).

I'd encourage your friend to Google the question and read through and see what he/she thinks. There are way too many variables and different cameras to make a blanket statement about which manufacturer is the better one. Sony may have an advantage with the point and shoots while Canon may have the advantage with DSLRs. Canon definitely has a much larger market share than Sony but that doesn't necessarily mean they are better. The question is too subjective to answer.

Really???!?!?! The price point is one of the top reasons to go for Sony. Not to mention the availablity of Sony, Zeiss, Sigma, Tamron lenses - hardly makes it a bad! Add to that that the image stabilisation is in the body meaning that you don't have to pay double for all your lenses......

There are 2 types of Canon people. The Apple types - usually 15-20 who think that having a Canon means they are cool and pro but don't actually have a bastard clue about anything. And the older more distinguished type who buy the Canon because it does what they want it to and they know how to use it. (btw, love those massive lenses on your OPG facebook wall photos )

To the OP - if your friend wants to pretend, look cool, not have a clue and spend a fortune: then get the Canon. If they want to dabble in photography before throwing a tonne of money at it, tell them to get the Sony. (the Cybershots are awesome too btw).

No surprise here, I have a Sony. I have won numerous competitions at global level and recieved a commendation at the last world photography awards. I've been shooting more enthusiastically for about 2 years now. If you think my pictures are aweful, by all means blame the Sony kit

Just like you can't make a blanket statement and say all Michelin tires are great...some models are, and quite honestly some aren't. I'm sure you can say that about camera brands. Within their respective lines there are the duds along with the winners. (how's that for a completely PC answer?) I believe Canon is still the overall world leader with Nikon second, but sweating out Sony as a strong up and coming third.
