If you have lenses, stay with Canon.

Other than that it's pretty much either or. You can find pros and cons on both sides but they're both pretty much going to get you as good results.

Besides the lens issue.... What feels better in your hands, looks better through the viewfinder to you.

It doesn`t matter how it feels in OUR hands, what matters is how it feels in YOURS.
go to a local store, pick up a camera, and play with it.

I`m gonna agree with Nick on this one, but if you do decide to switch, make sure to plan ahead, because switching brands every time you upgrade will get VERY expensive

What do you like to shoot the most and how much money do you have for this upgrade? That might sway you one way or the other, in terms of the overall system, and whether you're stuck at entry-level, or can afford midtier/full-frame.

Also, are you absolutely positive that what you need to upgrade is your camera body, not your lenses or technique? Why do you think you need to upgrade? Because, I will tell you right off the bat, in my estimation, that image quality is not going to dramatically improve from a body upgrade. My 50D was nicer than my XT, but it wasn't like a monstrous leap up in image quality. Ditto my 5D2 over the 50D. What increased was usability.

Something as simple as reading a book can have a much more dramatic impact on your images than spending a thousand bucks plus on a new dSLR body.

I recently upgraded a few months from a Sony. I'm very analytical and my wife hates it. I was bouncing between Nikon D90 and Canon 50d. I'd had pretty much made my mind up on the Nikon from the research I did til I went to Best Buy and held both cameras. The feel of the Canon 50d felt so good and sturdy compared to the D90; to make a long story short, they both have great specs and capabilities, so it's how it feels in your hands

And just to add more weight to the arguement of 'What feels good in your hands"... I had an Olympus E300 and was tossing up between the Nikon D90 and the Canon 50D... as you can see from my sig, the D90 won me over =)

Either.

Both are equally excellent cameras. Lenses are the issue. One can use old film lenses with Nikons.

I purchased my Nikons because of ergonomics, how they felt in my hands and the lenses. I also do not like the “in-your-face” white aspects of Canon lenses.

It’s a personal decision. Try before you buy.

What, and Canons can't?

If you have an entry level camera (D3100, D5000), you'd actually be better off using an adapter ring and a Canon body for an old non-CPU F-mount lens, because, while you have to put an adapter ring on the lens, you'll still retain metering. And unlike the D90 and above bodies, nothing will break if you mount a pre-AI lens.

on the Nikon mount, you can use Nikon F-mount glass. On a Canon, you can use Leica-R, Nikon F-mount, Pentax K-mount, Pentax screwmount (M42), Olympus OM, and Contax/Yashica lenses, using simple ring adapters. Nikon can use selected Leica-R, Olympus OM, and C/Y lenses by replacing the lens mount with a Leitax kit. But no simple ring adapters for you.
