...and then you get no pictures of birds other than rock pigeons and seagulls. Maybe house sparrows. The occasional fearless hummingbird.
![]() Bird photography is a dangerous thing, particularly with a dSLR. It's really really expensive. Most bird photographers will tell you that the minimum focal length you need is 400mm. Because birds are small and shy and hard to fill a frame with. Most of the really great bird photography you see is typically done with 500mm and 600mm lenses with teleconverters added. BIG heavy, expensive (four-figure price range) lenses. Those of us who are cheap use 400mm lenses, because that's about all we can afford. So, first, expect you'll need at least a $1000 lens (in the US), possibly a $1500 one, and that you'll be longing for $6000 monsters--the kind you can't handhold and need a new tripod and special tripod heads for. Bird photography is really expensive when it comes to the glass. That's why most folks would say it isn't really for beginners who aren't sure they want to spend that much on equipment, yet. The cheap way to do bird photography is to "digiscope" use a P&S camera and an adapter to attach it to a birding scope, but the quality of the images you get won't be the same.
