Best lens for Distance shot

Hi All, I am a private investigator and I have had alot of help of you guys on here. I have ascertained what apperture I need but I am wondering now what type of lens I need (ie 70mm 200mm etc etc macro) I will be appoximately 50-100 metres away from the subject I would be taking a picture of.

How much of the subject are you attempting to capture? Headshots will require a longer focal length, but waist-up shots should be fine with less.

Yes waist ups should be ok....would an 18-55mm be sufficient or maybe something a little longer??

Your first post was talking about needing to photograph at night. That means you need a WIDE aperture -- wider than the kit lens you just mentioned would allow, if you need a fast enough shutter speed to have better than a blurry blob of the person you're trying to photograph.

Even on a crop body, 55mm is short telephoto, and still a very wide shot from 50m away.

You're looking at the 200mm range.
