This is kind of where we are at in photography right now. I was in St. Augustine not long ago and met an artist/photographer selling images streetside. I commented on how he didn't have any images of the famous landmarks in that city; the Castillo de San Marcos, the Flagler Hotel, the Zoraida building, etc. "Oh, I have those," he remarked, "I just got tired of people saying, 'Look I have that same image here on my cell phone!'" These days everyone with a cell phone camera thinks they are a photographer. That's not entirely bad. I appreciate the fact that millions of people who never thought of using their artistic abilities are now exploring skills that are entirely new to them. That is good for the arts and for photography, in particular. However, I do wish that more people would educate themselves on what goes into a great photograph. Great images still take years of patient work and dedication along with a certain amount of luck. While digital imaging and cell phones have made photography easy and accessible to the masses, the craft is still just as challenging as ever. For that reason I applaud your interest in our craft and would encourage you dive deep into the inner workings even if you never choose to invest in a DSLR.

The iPhone has a sensor size as big as those in some compact digicams, and it's clearly got decent (tiny) optics. I think it's inevitable that the digicam market will be destroyed in the next five years, pushed out at the low end by camera phones and at the high end by mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras like the Olympus PEN.
