The 50D is an upgrade of the 40D
I own a 40D and have a friend who shoots with a 50D (he did own a 40D before)

I would get the 50D mainly because of the larger screen and the more MP gives you a bit more leeway when cropping.

Both are good cameras.

50D is better, but not a HUGE amount. I have the 50D and am very happy. As RT says above, screen and megpixel count helps.
If you can stretch the money, the 7D is the big leap forward.

Go to fredmiranda.com and do some research. I chose the 40d. More MP does not mean better it means more noise at higher iso on the same sensor. The only feature on the 50d I wish I had is the micro lens adjustments.

If you can wait, do so. Until September or October. Canon are scheduelled and rumored to be releasing a "60D" around Photokina.

If you can get the 40D cheaper I'd go for that. The main thing the 50D has going for it is higher res screen (920k vs 230k), their image quality is identical. Also, the additional megapixels is more likely to hurt you then help I believe - larger file sizes to move around, and not necessarily any more detail.

Snapsort has a good summary of the differences between the 40D and the 50D.
