Default Want a new camera but have a budget.

I want a new, good camera but I'm under a budget (this is as much as I can spend and not even right now, this is more for the future).

I'd like something with manual settings, maybe an advanced compact. I like to take macro and portrait shots. Around $500 max. Help please?

You could try to buy a used DSLR and used lenses. I can't speak for Canon or Nikon, but a used Sony Alpha 200/230 or 300/330 or 350/380 costs about 200-300 USD/EUR if you look out for it on ebay. Some old macro lenses are available for about 100 USD/EUR so you are in your budget region.

If you lived in Colorado then I would've sold you my XTi with kit lens, battery grip, bunch of batteries and wired remote for $300. Someone else has already said they'd buy it but they won't be here until July so I told them I'd wait.

If you are in Colorado and are still looking for one in July then let me know.

Seconded. Looks like you can also get a refurb G9/10 under $500

Used isn't a bad idea either. You might be able to get a D80 around that price, definitely a rebel or D40/50/60.

There's a pretty big difference between even an advanced P&S like the S90 and a DSLR. The learning curve on the SLR is going to be a lot more.

How much time do you think you want to invest in photography? Is it something where you just want to take some nice pictures once in a while, or do you want to learn? Either way is fine, but it makes a pretty big difference in recommendations.

Where are you located? Do you have a good camera shop near you (or even within two hours)? Buying used I'd rather go to a store than use the web.

You could also look into getting yourself a Panasonic FZ38, I've recently bought one after months of research and i'm really happy with it.
