Point 3 is irrelevant Point 4 is wrong. If you're doing more video, the 7D may be better. If you're doing low-light work, the D300s will be better. Also consider the system you're buying into: lenses, flashes, accessories, etc.

thanks for the insight! im mainly going to just shot photos but if needed at the time, ill use the video function. on ther other hand, if i needed to record videos,i already have a good/decent camcorder. im kinda leaning twoards the d300s now..

51 point 3D focus and tracking...amazing (a little bias however, I own the original D300 pre video version, and love it) I also own a Canon platform (20D) and being that I already own a lot of lenses and 2 flash units for it the issue will be when it's time for an upgrade for that body I'd certainly consider the 7D...or a 5D

As a still camera, the D300s is a little bit better. As a video camera, the 7D is a lot better. What are you using it for?

If you are taking pictures then get the Nikon, if you are taking videos then get the Nikon AND buy a video camera also!

Get your hands one one if possible, see which one feels ergonomically better to your hand.
And ultimately if you intend to expand into photography your lens selection is going to be important than which individual camera body you select. Don't focus so much on the features of the camera unless they're specific features that you know you're going to need. Don't overlook your optics. What lenses are you going to need, what glass do you think you'll want in the future? Are you going to be happy with the selection of lenses available to your camera mount down the line? The contrasts in this question are not quite as stark with a Canon vs. Nikon question as say a Canon vs Micro Four Thirds system, both Canon and Nikon have good glass to choose from. But it's still a good practice to focus less on the body, which you may discard and upgrade after a few years, and pay more attention to your lens selection which you may be holding on to for decades.
